Murray’s Memorial Day Reflections: Honor, Gratitude, and a Good Night’s Sleep

May 22, 2026

Hello there, friends. Murray here.

As I sit on my porch in Rutland, Vermont, watching the late spring sunshine warm the Green Mountains, Memorial Day has me thinking about a lot of things.

At my age, I’ve seen a few Memorial Days come and go. I’ve watched parades march down Main Street, listened to veterans share stories, and stood quietly while flags waved in the breeze. It’s a day that means something special. It’s a time to remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.

Their courage gave us the freedoms we enjoy every day—freedoms we often take for granted while we’re busy with our daily routines.

And while Memorial Day is certainly a time for reflection, it’s also the unofficial beginning of summer. Around here, that means backyard cookouts, family gatherings, lawn chairs appearing on porches, and neighbors suddenly becoming experts on grilling hamburgers.

I happen to be one of those neighbors.

Now, after a long day of hosting family, flipping burgers, and insisting that “no, really, I don’t need any help carrying that cooler,” an old fellow like me starts thinking about one thing.

Sleep.

Not the accidental kind that happens in a lawn chair after two hot dogs and a slice of pie. I’m talking about real, restorative sleep.

The kind that leaves you waking up refreshed instead of feeling like you spent the night wrestling a black bear.

You see, Memorial Day often inspires people to spruce things up around the house. They clean the deck, plant flowers, power wash the siding, and finally tackle all those projects they’ve been avoiding since winter.

But there’s one part of the home that often gets overlooked.

The mattress.

Now, I know it isn’t as exciting as a new grill or a shiny patio set. Nobody invites the neighbors over to admire their mattress.

“Hey Frank, come on upstairs and look at my lumbar support!”

That would be a strange conversation.

But here’s the thing: you spend roughly a third of your life in bed. If your mattress is sagging, squeaking, poking, or generally behaving like an antique farming implement, it may be time to consider an upgrade.

At Vermont Bedrooms, we help folks find mattresses that provide comfort, support, and better sleep night after night. Whether you’re a side sleeper, back sleeper, stomach sleeper, or someone who somehow ends up sleeping diagonally across the bed like a starfish, there’s a mattress designed to help you rest easier.

And rest matters.

Memorial Day reminds us to appreciate what we have. Family. Friends. Community. Freedom. Health.

Part of taking care of ourselves is making sure we get the quality sleep our bodies need. Better sleep can improve energy, mood, focus, and overall well-being. That’s not just old-man wisdom talking. It’s something I’ve learned over many years—and more than a few uncomfortable mattresses.

These days, I figure life is too short to spend nights tossing and turning.

I’ve reached the age where I appreciate practical luxuries. Comfortable shoes. A reliable coffee maker. A lawn mower that starts on the first pull. And a mattress that doesn’t sound like an old screen door every time I roll over.

That’s living.

So as Memorial Day approaches, I hope you’ll take a moment to remember and honor the heroes who served our nation with courage and sacrifice. Their legacy deserves our gratitude and respect.

And after the parade, after the cookout, and after you’ve enjoyed time with family and friends, I hope you’ll also take a moment to think about your own comfort and well-being.

Because tomorrow’s adventures start with tonight’s sleep.

From all of us at VermontBedrooms.com in Rutland, Vermont, we wish you a meaningful Memorial Day, a wonderful start to summer, and many nights of peaceful, comfortable rest.

Happy Memorial Day.
